The stirrup ring was popular in medieval times and is one of the oldest distinct styles of ring on record. As was done in ancient times, Dan will hand forge and sculpt this ring by alloying gold and beating the metal into shape on his anvils. This method is tragically becoming a lost art in these days of pressed and cast rings.

The pictured ring has been sold, but is shown as an example. This ring was painstakingly beaten and formed by Dan out of 14k gold, and then flush-set with a 4.5mm AA ruby at the crown. The width at the top of the ring is approximately 6mm, tapering to approximately 4mm at the base. The rise of the setting off of the finger is 4.75mm. Average thickness (depth) of the shank is 1.75mm.

The origin of the stirrup ring is unsettled. Some believe that the style was named for the inverted shape of a horse’s stirrups. Others believe that the shape was meant to emulate the vaulted arches of Gothic cathedrals. Whatever the case, the design seems timeless, despite its relative uncommon presence in modern times.
